Estelle leads MOBOs

Estelle is up for five MOBO awards.

The British singer is nominated for Best Song and Best Video for 'American Boy', Best UK Female, Best Album for her second effort
'Shine' and Best R'n'B/Soul Act.

Other nominees for the awards which recognise music of black origin include grime producer-and-rapper Wiley, Dizzee Rascal and Leona Lewis - whose named were revealed last night (10.09.08) at London's Beach Blanket Babylon.

MOBOs founder Kanya King believes the standard of the UK acts nominated proves they can now compete with their American counterparts.

She said: "It's fantastic to see artists like Estelle, who MOBO championed early on, get their due. I'd like to call on the music industry to keep up the good work and capitalise on this."

Former Spice Girl Mel B, who will host the ceremony with Run DMC star Reverend Run, said: "I have witnessed the rise of Estelle and Leona Lewis in the US and 2008 has been an incredible year for music of black origin on both sides of the Atlantic."

Adele and Duffy are up for Best UK Female, along with Estelle, Leona and M.I.A.

Estelle previously blasted the newcomers, saying: "You can't tell me that you can redefine soul music as Duffy and Adele because I didn't grow up with it and I don't identify with it."

The 2008 MOBO awards will be held at London's Wembley Arena on October 15.
